Itinerary

Burlington has long been a haven for farm-fresh produce and gorgeous New England scenery. Located just 45 minutes from the Canadian border and 95 miles from Montreal, it’s a city that attracts skiers, explorers, and the culturally curious. But there’s so much more to Burlington than the classic Vermont experience. It’s a hub for creativity and innovation with a dynamic downtown, an innovative culinary scene, and an always-welcoming community. Burlington is having a moment, and whether you’re traveling for leisure, seeking a staycation, or an entrepreneur looking for a new and exciting place to put down roots, the city will have something for you.

Here are some suggestions for how you can spend an unforgettable weekend in an endlessly charming Burlington.

Friday

A Welcoming Waterfront Afternoon

Check in to Hotel Champlain anytime after 4:00 p.m. You’ll notice right away how perfect our location is for all of your Burlington adventures—on the edge of the lake and in the heart of the city. Want to head to the Church Street Marketplace for some shopping? It’s less than a half mile away and will take about 10 minutes to walk. Or simply cross Battery Street to discover Waterfront Park and enjoy magnificent views of Lake Champlain (sometimes called “the sixth Great Lake” because of its impressive size). Our location makes it easy to discover all downtown Burlington has to offer, so take some time to wander iconic streets and parks to get yourself situated.

Friday

An Enticing Evening

Once you’ve worked up an appetite, head down to our own Original Skiff for whatever New England favorites you’re craving: you can’t go wrong with freshly shucked oysters, hushpuppies and a local IPA or two. Or get the weekend started right with a refreshing frosé. Original Skiff is an ideal introduction to Burlington’s incredible dining scene, so feel free to fill up on apps, sample the freshest seafood and savor a mouth-watering Vermont ribeye—all provided by local producers whose care and attention shows in the quality of their produce.

After a delicious dinner and some delightful drinks, maybe you have enough room for a Burlington classic: ice cream from the world famous Ben & Jerry’s. The Church Street Marketplace is open late on Fridays, so you can always wander over after your meal for the perfect dessert to get you into the Vermont vacation spirit.

Continue your night with another tipple or two, as you have plenty of perfect options right nearby. Craft beer fans won’t want to miss Foam Brewers, which is located right on Lake Champlain’s waterfront and home to a wide range of eclectic and inventive brews. For lively late-night fun, combine creative craft cocktails with an incredible selection of retro games at The Archives Bar. What better way to end your evening than by sipping your old-fashioned while playing an old-fashioned pinball or arcade game?

Saturday

A Brilliant Burlington Morning

We know it can be hard to roll out of beds this comfortable—especially after a night spent diving into our dynamic restaurant and bar scene! But knowing there’s excellent coffee waiting just downstairs might make things a bit easier. Pick yourself up with a handcrafted latte and hearty breakfast sandwich at Lily May’s on our mezzanine level. You can find a cozy spot in our lobby to hang out, or sip away on our front porch, where you can pair your morning habit with glorious views of Lake Champlain. Breathe in the fresh Vermont air blowing in off the water. If you’re looking for lighter fare, you can also enjoy fresh juice, blended just for you. Then get moving with a yoga session in our fitness center.

Vermont is famous for its local produce, so take advantage of easy access to the Burlington Farmers Market, just a short stroll (or even quicker bike ride!) from Hotel Champlain. The market is open every Saturday from May through October (and select dates in the winter), so carve out some time in the morning to explore the market and meet local producers. Healthy and wholesome food doesn’t get fresher than this, and the market is also a great place to find souvenirs and crafts from local artisans.

Saturday

A Foodie's Afternoon

Tasty treats are always available at the farmers market, but don’t leave Burlington without taking advantage of its incredible lunch options. There’s August First, a community-focused bakery and cafe that offers breakfast all day to go along with a menu of flavorful and creative sandwiches and salads. For one of the Champlain Valley’s most renowned lunches, take a quick 10-minute drive north of the Winooski River to experience Misery Loves Company, a hip and inspired haunt with several James Beard Award nominations. Burlington also offers tastes from around the world, including tantalizing Vietnamese fare from Pho Hong or delightful Turkish cuisine at Istanbul Kebab House, to name just a couple.

When you’ve had your fill, stroll back to Hotel Champlain to enjoy access to our on-property sauna and relax before dinner.

Saturday

An Evening of Innovative Dining

Once you’ve fully unwound with a satisfying sweat, head to your room for a refreshing shower before having a pre-dinner drink back at Original Skiff. Get the night started with a glass of natural wine or a frozen gin and tonic. Then it’s off to dinner at Hen of the Wood, chef Eric Warnstedt’s innovative and acclaimed restaurant that uses the very best offerings from premium local producers. Think local farm-raised meat, the freshest seafood, and vegetables grown right here in Champlain Valley.

For a truly unforgettable private dining experience, you and your group can reserve the Butcher Room for a chef’s choice menu that highlights seasonal ingredients in a unique and intimate setting. Hen of the Wood’s deep beer, wine, and cocktail menu is just as inspiring as its dining, so this is also the perfect place for a nightcap before you settle back in at Hotel Champlain.

Sunday

A Mellow Morning

Sunday is traditionally a day of rest, but rest looks different for everyone! Why not start your morning with a leisurely bike ride along the Burlington Bike Path, an 8-mile bike route that features majestic views of Lake Champlain and plenty of spots to stop for a scenic photo or snack. Bikes are free to borrow for guests of Hotel Champlain and cycling is the perfect way to get a little bit of exercise to go along with the fresh air and stunning views available in this gem of Vermont’s famously lush landscape.

After you’ve returned from your bike ride, grab lunch to go from our lobby cafe or sneak in one final trip to Ben & Jerry’s as a treat. With your Burlington experience coming to a close, you may want to find a way to bring a piece of Vermont home with you. Stop in at the Local Maverick market to shop for some of the best locally produced items. From delectable preserves and freshly baked treats to forest-foraged mushrooms and mouth-watering chocolate, you never know what you might find at this dynamic market.
